What is Propecia?
Propecia is the trade name for a drug that is called Finasteride. Propecia is a synthetic 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. 5-alpha-reductase is an enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Propecia is approved by the FDA for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and male pattern baldness.
Propecia in the treatment of male pattern baldness
In a trial that was done over a period of 5 years, males that had mild to moderate hair loss showed signs of hair regrowth when given 1mg of Propecia daily. The control group of men that were not given any Propecia showed signed of continued hair loss which then would develop to baldness.
